DreamWorks Movie Characters Will Inspire New Netflix Shows

0 yorum

Netflix's animation offerings continues to expand. On Monday, the video streaming service announced that characters from popular DreamWorks Animation movies — such as Shrek, Madagascar and Kung Fu Panda — will inspire original Netflix shows.

The multi-year agreement with DreamWorks comes just months after Netflix inked new licensing deals with Turner Broadcasting and Warner Bros. to stream previous seasons of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim shows. Netflix also struck a deal with Disney at the end of last year to start offering new, first-run Disney films in 2016.

"This [Dreamworks] deal represents a major expansion of what's already a phenomenal relationship, allowing us to bring beloved DreamWorks characters to the 40 countries where Netflix operates and setting the stage for us to innovate together as we expand into new markets," Ted Sarandos, Netflix's chief content officer, said in a statement.

Dubbed as the "largest deal for original first-run content in Netflix history," the new deal includes more than 300 hours of new programming inspired by DreamWorks characters as well as some of the DreamWorks-acquired Classic Media characters. No specifics were provided, but the shows will include familiar faces from the Classic Media library such as Archie, Dudley Do-Right, Felix the Cat and Mr. Magoo, and titles like Where's Waldo? and Voltron.

The first original series is expected to be available for streaming un 2014. For users in the United States and Latin America, Netflix will begin streaming DreamWorks' feature films in 2014, starting with The Croods.

In February, Netflix and DreamWorks announced their first Netflix original series for kids based the animated movie Turbo (pictured above), which hits theaters July 17. The series, Turbo F.A.S.T., will continue the film's plot in December.

For Anybody Hurting: A YouTube Video Confronts Darkness

On June 6, 2011, Eric Lim received a phone call from his older sister, Tanya. She wanted to apologize for an argument they'd had when she visited Los Angeles a few months before, but as Lim began to lecture her, Tanya cut him off.

"Eric, I just want you to know I love you very much, and I'm so proud of you," she told him. "You're going to do great in the film industry, I know it."

Lim, tired from having just moved across town, didn't think much of his sister's withdrawal. Later that day, he received another call — this time from his father in Chicago.

"We've lost your sister," he said. Tanya had committed suicide.

The phone call was her way of saying goodbye, and in her suicide note, she reiterated support for her little brother's dreams. She also left him her savings of $25,000, which she hoped could help him in his filmmaking aspirations.

Lim would eventually take this as an opportunity to speak directly to a generation of young people — the YouTube generation — dealing with depression and looking for support through digital media. He embarked on a film project to help foster online discussion about mental health, to honor his sister's memory and help prevent others from taking their lives. Read more…

Microsoft Defends Xbox One's Information-Gathering Techniques

0 yorum

The Xbox One's Kinect can be customized to not see or collect data on its users, said Microsoft Thursday in attempt to calm privacy concerns.

Microsoft said previously the next-generation Kinect will be able to see players faces, recognize their facial expressions, monitor their heart rate, respond to their voice and monitor their emotional feedback. While this certainly represents a leap forward in gaming technology, some have raised concerns about what Microsoft is doing with all this data.

In an attempt to clarify the capabilities of the new Kinect, Microsoft said that users will have complete control over each of its settings upon setup, including when the Xbox One's Kinect is on or off.

According to the Microsoft statement, when the Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, that conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.

It's important to note that The Washington Post published a report Thursday that says Microsoft and eight other tech companies are sharing a broad range of user data with the National Security Advisory under a secret program known as PRISM. While the report states this data collection is not intentionally targeted at "any U.S. citizen, any other U.S. person or anyone located within the United States," it overshadows any statement by Microsoft about privacy protection.

If you don't want the Kinect observing you during games or other entertainment, you can pause the device, Microsoft said — though some titles will require Kinect integration. When the Xbox One is turned off, the Kinect will only listen for the voice command of "Xbox On."

Additionally, while the Kinect can take in data from players to deepen the game experience, such as monitoring heart rates during a fitness game, Microsoft said the data remains on the Xbox One without the player's permission.

The new Kinect and Xbox One will launch later this year.

Metta World Peace's Weird Twitter Musings Are NBA Finals MVP

Pivotal game four of the NBA Finals tips off Thursday night, with LeBron James and the Miami Heat looking to avoid a 3-1 deficit against Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs.

But the finals' MVP so far hasn't been James or Duncan. It hasn't been surprise hero Danny Green. And it hasn't been this ridiculous dunk block.

No, if the finals ended today, the MVP would have to go to Los Angeles Laker Metta World Peace — or, to be more specific, World Peace's fascinatingly bizarre Twitter feed. Read more…

Wednesday night's first game of the Stanley Cup Finals was an-all time sports classic. The Chicago Blackhawks finally scored in triple overtime to secure a come-from-behind, marathon win over the visiting Boston Bruins in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

The four-hour, 32-minute game was instantly lauded by fans and media on Twitter as one that will live on in history, both for its length and the tenacity of both teams' exhausted players. Likewise, Andrew Shaw's late, late, late goal for the 'Hawks will surely be replayed for years and years to come in highlight montages and NHL retrospectives.

20 TV Shows With the Most Social Media Buzz This Week

Voting wasn't the only way millions of Americans participated in the 2012 presidential election. Coverage by major networks and cable channels garnered legions of social media mentions throughout election week.

But even though 14 total broadcast stations and cable news networks raked in about 1.5 million social reactions each, music truly ruled the week. The single program with the most activity on social media was the MTV Europe Music Awards on MTV2, which earned more than 5.5 million mentions. By contrast, CNN had the most socially active audience during its election coverage, but at just less than 2 million posts, it didn't come close to touching the star-studded awards show, which featured Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and viral superstar Psy. Read more…

'Always On' Could Change Your Gaming Habits Forever

It’s all but set in stone that Microsoft’s sleek, new next-gen iteration of the Xbox — whether it’s called the “Xbox 720” or simply “Xbox” — will star in Tuesday’s major company announcement.

But before you start saving your pennies, it’s important to address a very buzzy rumor surrounding the device: The next Xbox could be “Always On.”

It sounds innocuous enough, but the Always On trend is very polarizing for game developers and fans alike. Some view it as the best way to rid piracy once and for all, while others are concerned its massive drain on resources could affect how everyone plays his or her games.

Mashable spoke with game developers and media distributors across the spectrum, from big companies to tiny studios, to get a handle on what Always On means and how it can affect you. Even if the next Xbox doesn’t come out with Always On capabilities, you will see a lot more of it on your computer, and maybe even in consoles to come. Read more…

The grossed-out fan then shared the video with Houston's local NBC affiliate. We've embedded the clip below: Read more…

10 Star Wars Technologies We Actually Want

A long time ago — well, last Friday — the White House struck down a petition for a real Death Star on its We the People site. In one swift stroke, the Obama administration Force-choked any politically active nerd's greatest dream: seeing that technological terror floating beside our lame, forest-free moon.

OK, so maybe building a Death Star was always going to be impossible, even for a computer. Still, Star Wars is a treasure trove of tech richer than the salt mines of Kessel. All those ideas are just waiting to be exploited and transformed into reality. Read more…
